One of the teachings I have received that I think about daily is Thich Nhat Hanh’s “Are You Sure?” practice. Whether it is as simple as my perceived belief in the solidity of a table, or as complex as my beliefs about existence and morality, he taught to moment by moment, repeatedly ask the question, Are you sure?
In a moment where conviction is causing such destructive violence, I think it is particularly important to remember this practice. I think beliefs, no matter how noble we think they are, can always stand to undergo purification by the fire of questioning.
I think.
But I’m not sure.
